Too Much Noise and GTD

|

I just listened to Mac Power Users episode #340, where David and Katie interview Mike Williams, President and CEO of the David Allen Company. I've written in the past about my struggles reading the eponymous book. I cannot get past the in-depth description of each of the 5 steps. Taking another look, I've missed the whole point of the methodology, which is on the very first page:

If you’re like me, you like getting things done and doing them well, and yet you also want to savor life in ways that seem increasingly elusive, if not downright impossible, if you’re working too hard. This doesn’t have to be an either-or proposition. It is possible to be effectively doing while you are delightfully being, in your ordinary workaday world.

GTD is not about making you a better office drone. the methodology can help you live a well-rounded life. That makes a lot of sense now!

On the podcast, Mike Williams stressed the importance of being kind to yourself when adopting GTD. Through practice you can improve quality of life and minimize overwhelm. It's OK to ease into the methodology.

There's too much noise in my mind right now, and I'm not getting into a trusted system, and the things I do put down are not consulted at the proper time. As a result, I can't truly relax. And I'm unemployed!

There's no way I'll become a GTD zealot, but I'll pick up the bits and pieces that make sense to me. I'll give the book one more shot, thanks to David and Katie's top-notch show.
